What clay is best for me?
There are many different types of clay, Earthenware is a commonly used clay in pottery building, once it’s been through the process of firing & glazing it becomes food & drink safe, essentially waterproof.
We also recommend & sell MAD clay (Model Air Drying) which is great for sculptures & pieces not being used for food & drink. MAD clay doesn’t need firing, you let it air dry then paint & decorate.
Earthenware: Firing temperature 1050c | Glazing temperature 1080-1180c
M.A.D Clay: Air dry
Do I have to fire my work?
If you intend on using your pieces for food or drink ie: plate or cup, then yes, you will need to fire your clay. Non-fired pieces aren’t waterproof or functional, but they can be purely decorative.

Glazing?
If you are using Earthenware clay & would like to glaze your pot then you can purchase a spectrum of colour glazes for your pieces.
If you don’t intend on firing your pieces, then you can use acrylic paint for decorative purposes. Painting for decorative purposes also applies to MAD clay.
Can I use my oven at home to fire my work?
Unfortunately, not. Domestic ovens at home usually only heat to about 280c your clay pieces need to get to about a 1000c.
Do I need my apron & placemat?
In your Clay Play Pottery kit, you’ll find an apron, water bowl & placemat. The best surfaces for clay are usually plywood or smooth timber. We’ve included a placemat so you don’t destroy your tabletop or furniture (it’s made from vinyl and can easily be cleaned & reused). We also recommend wearing your apron (the apron is one size fits all) as clay can splatter and leave dust residue on clothing. They’re included in your pack for convenience.
